Raise chicks into hens and roosters, then harvest eggs.
Buy a Chicken Coop, feed a chick to maturity, and collect clutches of six eggs. Add a rooster to fertilise your hen and hatch the next generation.
You can own and trade chicks, hens and roosters without a coop — the coop is only needed to house them so they can be fed. Eggs never need a coop at all.

Buy a Barn, equip your cows, and harvest milk on a daily cycle.
You'll be able to own and trade cows before building a barn — the barn is only needed to equip them and start collecting milk.
